Although in the grand scheme of things, VoIP solutions are better suited for your business and personal needs than regular landline, it might take you a while to get used to the technology upgrade from the traditional setup—especially when VoIP service providers come with several unique features, such as Call Transfer to voicemail and remote users—features that your old phone line didn’t.
But there is no need for you to worry. Mitel is one of the best VoIP service providers on the market. With its user-friendly interface, Mitel provides you with all the features of a VoIP network and is still easy to set up and use. However, if you still need help to go about it, we’ve got your back!
The following guide will help you master Call Transfers on Mitel VoIP, so stick around!
01
First Things First: Choose Your Type of Transfer
This isn’t the good old days of landline phones: nowadays, with Mitel VoIP, transferring a call can mean any one of several things:
- Transferring your call to an internal extension
- Transferring your all to an external extension, such as a remote worker or cell phone
- Transferring a call to voicemail.
We’ll take you through each type of transfer.
02
BEFORE WE BEGIN, CHOOSE YOUR TYPE OF TRANSFER:
You can choose to transfer your call in a number of ways. Each serves a different purpose and requires a different configuration:
- Call transfers to an internal phone line
- Call transfers to an external phone
- Call transfers to voicemail.
03
STEP 1: WHAT ARE WARM AND COLD TRANSFERS?
Before we begin with the guide, let’s first understand the two types of transfers:
- Warm transfers– also known as the ‘announced’ transfer, Warm Transfer gives you the chance to speak with the recipient of your transfer before the transfer is made.
- Cold transfers– or the ‘blind’ transfer doesn’t give you a chance to speak with the recipient and the call is transferred directly.

STEP 2: TRANSFERRING WITH YOUR HANDSET
Mitel allows you to transfer calls using different types of handset! However, the configuration might differ from handset to handset.
If you’re using the IP 400 Series Phone
- The Transfer option will appear on your screen when you receive a call. When you select the option, it will put your caller on hold.
- Enter the extension number of the transfer recipient to transfer to an external number; enter the accurate extension code which is usually 9, followed by 1 and then the 10-digit number to make the transfer.
- Now, decide whether you want to make a warm or cold transfer. If you decide to make a warm transfer, wait for the recipient to pick up, speak with them, and then when you are ready to complete the transfer, select the Yes button and disconnect your line.
- For a cold transfer, just press the Transfer button and disconnect your line. Your call will be successfully transferred.
- If you wish to cancel the call, just hit the Cancel button. To take your call off the hold, hit the line button.
If you’re using the Cisco 7900 Series Phone
- Click on the Transfer option on your screen anytime during an active call. This will put your caller on hold and a new call connection will appear on your screen.
- As described above, enter the extension number of the transfer recipient to transfer to an external number; enter the accurate extension code which is usually 9, followed by 1 and then the 10-digit number to make the transfer.
- Now decide whether you want to make a warm or cold transfer. If you decide to make a warm transfer, wait for the recipient to pick up, speak with them, then when you are ready to complete the transfer, select the Connect button to connect the caller with the transfer recipient and disconnect your line.
- For a cold transfer, just press the Connect button and disconnect your line. Your call will be successfully transferred.
- If you wish to cancel the call, just hit the Cancel button. To take your call off the hold, hit the line button.

STEP 3: TRANSFERRING CALLS TO VOICEMAIL
Once you’ve understood how to transfer calls to other phone lines, you can move on to the next step, which is learning how to transfer calls to voicemail.
Just like transferring calls to other phone lines, transferring calls to voicemail also varies depending on the handset you are using to make the transfer:
Transferring Calls with the IP 400 Series Phone to Voicemail
- The Transfer option will appear on your screen when you receive a call. When you select the option, you will hear a dial tone and your caller will be put on hold.
- You can now enter the specific voicemail box extension you want to make the transfer to.
- Now click on the More button, immediately followed by hitting the To VM button. This needs to be done in quick succession or else the call will go through the active line instead of the voicemail of the recipient.
- Disconnect the line.
In the event you want to transfer a call directly to another extension’s voicemail without answering the call:
- Hit the #button on your handset.
- Click on Voicemail.
- Click on the To VM option.
- Disconnect the line.
Transferring Calls with the Cisco 7900 Series Phone to Voicemail
On a Cisco 7900 Series phone, transfers to voicemail are even more effortless:
- The Transfer option will appear on your screen when you receive a call. When you select the option, you will hear a dial tone and your caller will be put on hold.
- Now hit the ToVmail button, and enter the extension of the phone line you want to transfer it to.
- Disconnect the line.
